The yellowhammer, or northern flicker, is a woodpecker species that has a wide range, and is not endangered.

Your description is unfortunately fairly vague - it would help if you could give the approximate size of the bird, whereabouts you saw it (habitat, region of the US/world), what it was doing, etc.

However, based on your description, I would assume it is a Northern Flicker. If you look for it in a field guide, it is with the woodpeckers.
