After the Second World War, most of the European countries were left devastated.

Eventually, in 1948, The Organisation for European Economic Co-operation (OEEC) was established to restructure the European economics.

Later, its membership was extended to non-European states.

Thus,In 1961, it was renamed into the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD).
