(b Frankfurt am Main, 2 Dec 1905; d nr Detroit, MI, 9 May 1970). American architect of German birth. He studied architecture at the Eidgenossische Technische Hochschule in Zurich (1925-8) and worked in Andr? Lur?at's office in Paris, where he also studied sculpture with Aristide Maillol (1928-9). The experience with Maillol, his own predilection for sculpture, and his early admiration for the work of Le Corbusier are often evident in his architecture. In 1929 he emigrated to the USA, working first in New York for Harvey W. Corbett.
