Ottilie Wildermuth

Wildermuth, Ottilie (Rottenburg/Nekkar, 1817-77), née Rooschütz, married in 1843 Professor J. D. Wildermuth of Tübingen. Described by a contemporary as an ‘echte und rechte Hausfrau in glücklichster Ehe’, she wrote many short stories and Novellen (Bilder und Geschichten aus dem schwäbischen Leben, 1862; Schwäbische Pfarrhäuser, not in book form until 1910), which had considerable popularity in the 19th c. Her stories appeared first in magazines. Some of them were addressed to women (Aus dem Frauenleben, 2 vols., 1855-7; Die Heimat der Frau, 1859), others to the young (Aus der Kinderwelt, 1854; Kindergruß, 1864; Kinderglückwünsche, 3 vols., 1874-5; Jugendgabe, 1864). In her day as well known as Johanna Spyri, she edited the magazine Jugendgarten from 1870. She knew Uhland and J. Kerner (her correspondence with him appeared in 1960). Her Gesammelte Werke (10 vols.) were published 1891-4.
