has two primary meanings which are open to ambiguity: (1) 'remarkable or conspicuous (among others of its kind)' (the outstanding performance of the evening), and (2) 'not yet settled or completed' (three outstanding matters to discuss). In practice, however, context and (in speech) intonation are likely to render ambiguity theoretical rather than actual.

1. Checks or drafts that have not been presented to the paying bank for payment, or are still in the process of collection.

2. Aggregate amount owed by a bank's credit card holders; this usually is less than total card volume due to early payments.

Finance: uncollected funds, or accounts receivable; also unpaid obligations.

Securities: a corporation's capital stock; stock issued and sold to investors, less stock repurchased by the issuer (treasury stock).
