Banking:

1. Checks or drafts that have not been presented to the paying bank for payment, or are still in the process of collection.

2. Aggregate amount owed by a bank's credit card holders; this usually is less than total card volume due to early payments.

Finance: uncollected funds, or accounts receivable; also unpaid obligations.

Securities: a corporation's capital stock; stock issued and sold to investors, less stock repurchased by the issuer (treasury stock).

One issued by the company but not yet cleared by the bank. It is listed in the cash payments journal for the month but is not included on the bank statement for that month. In preparing the bank reconciliation, it is deducted from the bank balance. The exception is an uncleared Certified Check, which is not considered outstanding since both parties, the company and the bank, know about it and have subtracted it.
