Pabna (Bengali: পাবনা Pabna) is a city in the west-central region of Bangladesh and the major city of Pabna District. It is located on the Padma river (Ganges) and has a population of about 138,000.

Transport

From Pabna to the Bangladesh capital Dhaka is about four hours by road, crossing the Jamuna Multi-purpose Bridge. Hardinge Bridge, a steel railway bridge and Lalon Shah bridge over the Padma located near Pabna is a link between western and northern Bangladesh. Before the Partition of India, it was a major rail stop for trains from Calcutta to Assam and Darjeeling. A ferry rout has been re-opened for Dhaka to Pabna transport. Again, there is a plan of making a bridge over the river Padma on the route of Pabna-Rajbari and Ishurdi (One of the most important Railway stations of the North-Bengle) railway station in the main town of Pabna. So, transport is easy and getting easier day by day.

Industry

Pabna is a major industrial area, especially in textiles. The largest meat factory in southeast asia called "Bengal Meat[1]" is situated in Kashinathpur, third largest town of Pabna. Also the leading consumer goods and pharmaceuticals producer of Bangladesh, called "Square Consumer Products" and "Square pharmaceuticals". Also the country's oldest pharmaceuticals named "Edruc Limited", has their major production plant situated in this district. There is a consumer food company in Pabna named Universal Food Limited. Recently,the largest food production on gas in the north bengal is established in Pabna- Al Amin Biscuit and Food Limited.

Education

In 2008 the government established a medical college in Pabna. Other educational institutions include the Pabna Zilla School, Pabna Cadet College, Polytechnic Institute, Edward College, Bulbul College, Government Women's College, Pabna collage, Pabna Government Girls' School, Pabna Central Girls' School and the R.M. Academy school. Recently some English Medium Schools have started sessions here, such as- Rainbow Kindergarten, Pathfinder Kindergarten, Square Kindergarten etc.. This year, a Science and Technology University has been established in Pabna. Admission of the academic year 2008-2009 has been completed. Pabna Medical College has also re-opened. A laboratory high school and a collegiate school is under construction. There is also a Textile engineering college in Pabna which already got a good demand in the country.

Health

Pabna has the largest mental hospital in the former state of East Bengal. It also has a big general hospital, medical centers and many private clinics as well. A medical college hospital is under construction.

Culture

Pabna has the remains of the Hindu Temple of Jor Bangla. The Jagannath Temple at Chatmohor is considered one of the most beautiful Hindu temples in Northern Bangladesh. A wonderful mosque Varara Moshjid is in Pabna district. Inhabitants of this district are much cultured and hospitable.
