  4. Mathematics. Of or being operations or sequences of operations, such as differentiation and integration, when applied to only one of several variables at a time.

A component vibration at a particular frequency in a compound tone. It need not be harmonic. Fundamentals or overtones are sometimes described as partials but the term is generally used in referring to components in the tone of such a body as a bell. See Harmonics.

  • p. pressure — the pressure exerted by a specific gas in a mixture of gases. Because the amount of the gas dissolved in a liquid is proportional to the pressure of the gas on the fluid the concentration of a gas in a fluid is expressed as its partial pressure.
