Computer Desktop Encyclopedia: cut and paste

To move data from one location to another. When the operation is complete, there is nothing left in the original location. It may refer to relocating files from one folder to another or to relocating selected text or images from one document to another. All modern operating systems and applications have cut and paste capability that is typically selected from an Edit menu.

"Cut and Paste" Is Often "Copy and Paste"

Users very often duplicate data by copying files, images and text from one location to another. However, they often tend to refer to the operation as "cut and paste," which is a relocation, rather than the more accurate "copy and paste." See clipboard, copy and paste and Win Copy between windows.
