Pat O Brien's is a bar located in New Orleans, on Bourbon
Street. The bar is purported to have invented the world famous
Hurricane Cocktail in the 1940s; due to difficulties importing
Scotch during WW II, salesmen would often force bar owners to
purchase up to 50 cases of rum before allowing a sale on a single
case of a good whiskey or scotch. In order to run through the
excess rum, the barmen at Pat O Brien's came up with a recipe that
mixed sweet fruit juices and rum in a tall Hurricane glass (so
called because of its shape like a hurricane lamp).
