Named for Dr. Klaus Patau, who reported the syndrome in 1960. It
is sometimes called Bartholin-Patau syndrome, named in part for
Thomas Bartholin, who described an infant with the syndrome in
1656.

In a few rare cases Patau syndrome may coexist with
Klinefelter's syndrome or other chromosomal abnormalities.
