Pearson Education

Pearson Education is an international PreK-20 educational publishing company of textbooks and other educational material, such as multimedia learning tools. It was created in 1998 when Pearson purchased the education division of Simon & Schuster and merged it with its own education division, Addison–Wesley Longman.

Pearson Education is headquartered in Boston, MA, Glenview, IL, Chandler, AZ and Upper Saddle River, New Jersey, USA.^[1] It is part of Pearson PLC, which is headquartered in London, England, UK, with offices in Harlow and Oxford.

Partnerships

Pearson Education has partnered with five other higher-education publishers to create CourseSmart, a company developed to sell college textbooks in eTextbook format on a common platform.^[2]

School Systems

In 2006, Pearson acquired Chancery SMS and PowerSchool. Both are web-based Student information systems for K-12 schools. These two products, along with state reporting systems, legacy products like SASI, and others, make up the School Systems division of Pearson.

PowerSchool, a company of 160 employees,^[3] was acquired in March 2001 by Apple Inc.. Apple then sold it to Pearson Education in April 2006.^[4]

ChancerySMS was acquired a month later, with the deal closing in May 2006.^[5]

Competitors

Pearson Education operates globally and has a range of competitors, both on a global basis as well as in each country it operates. In the United States of America, the main competitors in the K–12 (education) include Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, a subsidiary of EMPG and McGraw Hill Education a division of McGraw Hill Inc.. Internationally, competitors include: Macmillan Education, a division of Georg von Holtzbrinck GmbH; and EMPGI an affiliate of Houghton Mifflin Harcourt.
