Biography

Perry Farrell is quite simply, one of the most important and original musical figures of the '90s. Born Perry Bernstein in New York City on March 29, 1959, Perry moved with his family to Miami, FL as a youngster, and eventually wound up in Los Angeles, CA, where he discovered the liberating punk rock movement. By the early-80's goth-rock was sweeping across L.A. - as a result, Perry changed his name to Perry Farrell ('peripheral') and formed the goth-alternative band, Psi Com. While the group was an important musical stepping stone for Perry (his trademark heavily effected vocal style, ethereal music, etc.), the band eventually fell apart before they could sign to a major label. Years later, in 1994, Triple X Records would issue a self-titled, 5-track Psi Com compilation. Undettered, Farrell put together what would become one of the greatest rock bands of all time, Jane's Addiction. He hooked up with a pair of young metalheads, drummer Stephen Perkins and guitarist Dave Navarro, plus alternative fan Eric Avery on bass. The quartet was harder rocking than Farrell's previous outfit, and injected their rock with unpredictability -unafraid to touch upon other non-rock musical styles and making great use of dynamics. The band was also different in that it was against the testosterone-heavy image of other rockers at the time, the bandmembers would often kiss each other on stage and Farrell would sometimes dress in drag. All of the hoopla paid off for the band as they became an instant favorite on the L.A. club scene, issuing their self-titled debut on Triple X in 1987. Like it's music, the band's audience was varied - metalheads, punkers, and goths all worshipped them. A huge bidding war ensued, with Warner Bros. eventually signing the up-and-coming band. Although Jane's Addiction would only be together for 2 more albums, 1988's Nothing's Shocking and 1990's Ritual De Lo Habitual (both platinum-certified), they were a major reason for alternative rock's eventual mainstream acceptance and success. Both albums are widely considered classics, proving to be incredibly influential on the 90's alt-rock scene. Eventually, drug-fueled bickering helped break up the group, but not before they would headline the inaugural Lollapalooza tour in 1991 (Farrell was the founder of the eventual annual tour). Perry also tried his hand at filmmaking around this time, with the hard-to-decipher Gift. Perry went straight into his next project, Porno For Pyros, which included ex-Jane's drummer Perkins, as well as guitarist Peter DiStefano and bassist Martyn LeNoble. While the new outfit contained some of the same musical trademarks as J.A., it proved to be not as musically adventurous or

abstract. A pair of underrated albums were issued, 1993's self-titled debut and 96's Good God's Urge, and while the band was a popular concert attraction, Farrell split the band up in 1997, shortly after an appearance on the Private Parts soundtrack and a performance at the movie's premier. Later in '97, Farrell did a brief reunion tour with Jane's Addiction (Eric Avery, who refused the invitation, was replaced by The Red Hot Chili Peppers' Flea on bass), releasing a spotty live/outtakes collection Kettle Whistle the same year. A year later, Farrell became a father and swore off drugs and drink for good - focusing on a new project, dubbed Gobalee. Before the new project could get off the ground, Farrell abruptly abandoned it, concentrating on recording his first solo album, which featured contributions by Rage Against The Machine guitarist Tom Morello and Red Hot Chili Peppers guitarist John Frusciante. In November of 1999, the retrospective Rev was issued, containing hits and rarities from both Jane' s Addiciton and Porno for Pyros, as well as a pair of solo tracks. In 2001, Farrell's solo album Song Yet To Be Sung arrived, marking his first new material in five years as well as a more global, spiritual approach to his music. ~ Greg Prato, All Music Guide

Perry Farrell (born Peretz Bernstein in New York City on March 29, 1959) is a musician who, as the frontman of Jane's Addiction, was one of the pioneers of alternative rock. Peretz (פרץ) is his Hebrew name (meaning "voice of the land"), as well as his DJ moniker ("DJ Peretz"). His stage name is a play on the word peripheral (although Farrell also happens to be his brother's name).

Early life

Farrell was born in Queens, NY and moved to Miami with his family during his teens. His father was a jeweler, and his mother committed suicide when Farrell was three, an event later noted in the Jane's Addiction song "Then She Did." Early musical influences included David Bowie and Lou Reed. Following his graduation from high school, Farrell moved to California in the early 1980s to live as a surfer, lived in his car and made money working construction and waiting tables.[citation needed] Perry Farrell has been sighted at premier surfing destinations throughout the world, most notably Bali (see Surfer magazine) in 2001.

Psi Com

He quickly became the frontman for the gothic rock band Psi Com in LA, and traveled in a larger community of area musicians including the bands X, Fishbone, and Black Flag. Psi Com broke up around 1985 when other members fell in with religious cults[citation needed], and Farrell soon met Eric Avery through mutual friends. The two began jam sessions which would become the initial foundation for Jane's Addiction.

Jane's Addiction and rise to fame

Jane's Addiction made its name in mid-1980s LA by building up a rampant fan base with legendary, high-energy shows in small LA rock clubs, driven by Farrell's high-pitched singing, manic dancing and drug-fueled general showmanship. In 1991, prior to Jane's Addiction dissolving, he, Ted Gardener, and Marc Geiger created the Lollapalooza festival as a farewell tour for Jane's Addiction. Lollapalooza ran annually as a travelling festival until 1997. Farrell is therefore generally acknowledged as one of the "godfathers"[citation needed] of alternative rock music. Jane's Addiction, prior to their first break-up released three albums Jane's Addiction, Nothing's Shocking and Ritual De Lo Habitual with the latter being their most critically acclaimed. A B-Sides album from the Ritual sessions, titled "Live and Rare" was released in Japan.

Porno for Pyros

Following the break-up of Jane's Addiction, Farrell formed Porno for Pyros with former bandmate Stephen Perkins as well as newcomers Peter DiStefano on guitar and Martyn LeNoble on bass. Together they released two albums, Porno for Pyros and Good God's Urge. Farrell put the band on hiatus to concentrate on a Jane's Addiction reunion; however there are plans for a third album in the next few years.[citation needed]

Jane's Addiction 'Relapse'

In 1997 Jane's Addiction reformed for a brief reunion tour with Flea replacing Eric Avery on bass. They supported this with the release of Kettle Whistle, a rarities album featuring 4 newly recorded songs.

Solo career

To kickstart his solo career, Farrell released Rev in 1999, a compilation featuring songs from his previous two bands as well as two new solo songs. In 2001, he released his debut solo album, Song Yet To Be Sung, whose lyrics are inspired by Kabballah (Jewish mysticism). "Song Yet To Be Sung" received a mixed critical reaction and was generally met with poor reviews from fans.[citation needed]

He occasionally DJs under the stage name of DJ Peretz.

Jane's Addiction's Return

Farrell is sometimes credited with changing the fortunes of the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival.[citation needed] Following the festival's disastrous first year in 1999, the event was not held in 2000. In 2001, a decision was made to organize the festival again, but just a few months before the festival was set to occur, there was still no headlining group. Farrell, who was friends with the festival's organizers, decided to reunite Jane's Addiction for the 2001 event, which helped draw large crowds and allowed the festival to yield a profit (which was not the case in 1999). This also started a Coachella tradition of reuniting at least one major artist each year. To date, Farrell has played at more Coachella festivals than any other performer.

Farrell again toured with Jane's Addiction in 2001 and 2003. In 2003, Jane's Addiction released an album, Strays, which was well received.[citation needed] They toured extensively in North America & Europe, as well as performing at the Big Day Out festivals in Australia and New Zealand. Internal struggles saw the band split up again in early 2004. A Best of release following the final death of the band was released in 2006, titled Up From the Catacombs.

Satellite Party

Farrell recently formed a new band/theatrical entity entitled The Satellite Party. Satellite Party made its debut appearance in Los Angeles at The Key Club on July 18, 2005, followed by a performance at Lollapalooza 2005, held in Grant Park in downtown Chicago on July 24, 2005.

In November 2006, Satellite Party played with The Doors at the Whisky a Go Go on the Sunset Strip, for the Doors' 40th anniversary.

Their debut album, Ultra Payloaded, released on May 29, 2007, on Columbia Records, with contributions from artists such as John Frusciante and Flea of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, electronic dance producers Hybrid, former Red Hot Chili Peppers/Pearl Jam drummer Jack Irons, Joy Division/New Order bassist Peter Hook, and Fergie of the Black Eyed Peas.[1]

Satellite Party performed at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival on April 27, 2007. On June 29th, 2007 Satellite Party performed alongside Pearl Jam, Kings of Leon and Queens of the Stone Age at Rock Werchter, Belgium. They also performed at Buzz Beach Ball 3 in Kansas City, Missouri (a concert sponsored by KRBZ), and EndFest 16 in Seattle, Washington.

Other Musical Colaborations

Performs vocals in Hybrid's song "Dogstar" on their 2006 album I Choose Noise. Featured on Mad Professor's album Method to the Madness in the song "King Z". Featured on Thievery Corporation's Cosmic Game, on the track "Revolution Solution".

Work Outside Music

In December 2001, Farrell risked his life by flying into politically troubled Sudan with other members of Christian Solidarity International to negotiate the release of Sudanese slaves. Jane's Addiction donated their earning from one concert for the redemption of over 2300 people, who had been enslaved under terrible conditions. Once the redemption agreement was signed, Farrell started up freedom parties at various redemption sites "armed only with a boom box and his legendary voice."[citation needed]

"He began dancing and singing," said an associate; "I wasn't sure what would happen, but then everyone joined in. Everyone was dancing. Even the Arab retrievers joined in. It was Christians, Muslims, and Jews all dancing together. Arabs, Africans, Americans, and Europeans — all."[citation needed]

Farrell also met up with Tony Blair at 10 Downing Street on 31 January 2007, to discuss global warming. He presented the Prime Minister with a CD of the Satellite Party track "Woman in the Window".

Farrell appeared in the Gregg Araki film Doom Generation, which starred Rose McGowan.

Perry Farrell's number one priority is the environment and he plans to become a digital-only artist for his next release.[2]

Perry Farrell is the only person who has performed at all eight Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festivals to date, having appeared under five different names (Perry Farrell, Jane's Addiction, DJ Peretz, Satellite Party, and with Hybrid). "DJ Peretz" and "The Chemical Brothers" are the only names to have appeared on the festival's lineup card more than four times.

Personal life

Farrell married Etty Lau, a professional dancer who has performed in all the Jane's Addiction shows since the 1997 Relapse tour, in early 2002. The couple now have two sons together, Hezron Wolfgang and Izzadore Bravo.

PurimPalooza 2006

In 2006, Farrell performed at Purimpalooza, which celebrates the Jewish holiday of Purim and the birthday of Chabad Rabbi Langer. It was a concert for all ages and presented different Jewish musical groups. Taking place in Ruby Skye in San Francisco, crowds of people came to see bands including Moshav, Chutzaph, Perry Farrell, and Matisyahu. Purimpalooza turned out to be a success, filling up the entire venue with a very diverse crowd.
