(pûr'sə-nĕl') pronunciation
n.
    1. The body of persons employed by or active in an organization, business, or service.
    2. (used with a pl. verb) Persons.
  1. An administrative division of an organization concerned with the body of persons employed by or active in it and often acting as a liaison between different departments.

[French, from Old French, personal, from Latin persōnālis. See personality.]

The word is pronounced with the stress on the third syllable, and refers to the human resources of an organization or institution, originally in the armed forces and later in the business world. It is often used attributively (i.e. before a noun), e.g. personnel carrier (in military contexts), personnel officer (in business contexts), or is qualified in some way, e.g. military personnel and trained personnel. Used by itself it also means 'a personnel department' (I'd better check with Personnel), although this name is now giving way to the more fashionable term human resources, and it occasionally occurs with a preceding numeral to denote a number of personnel: one copy to every 25 personnel.

Previous:personally, personage, personality, persona
Next:perspective, perspicacious, perspicuous, persuasion
