Biography

Best known as the bassist for UFO, Pete Way has also been a member of Waysted, Fastway, and Ozzy Osbourne's touring band. Born August 7, 1951, in Enfield, Middlesex, Way co-founded UFO in 1969 along with singer Phil Mogg and drummer Andy Parker. During the early '70s, the group enjoyed some success, but it wasn't until the arrival of German guitarist Michael Schenker that UFO truly came into their own, and issued a string of influential heavy metal classics -- especially 1977's Lights Out, 1978's Obsession, and 1979's Strangers in the Night. It was also during this era that UFO earned the title of one of rock's hardest-partying bands, while Way was often photographed playing a low-slung Gibson Thunderbird bass and wearing a polka-dotted stage outfit.

UFO soldiered on after Schenker's exit in 1979, before Way followed suit in 1982. Co-forming Fastway with ex-Motörhead guitarist "Fast" Eddie Clarke, Way opted to exit the group shortly after the release of its self-titled 1983 release (which went on to become a surprise hit in the U.S.), to serve as Ozzy Osbourne's touring bassist and to form another new band, Waysted. Releasing several albums in a short period of time (including the mildly successful Vices in 1983 and a self-titled release in 1984), Waysted was over shortly thereafter. The early '90s saw Way rejoin UFO, before the Schenker-era UFO lineup reunited for 1995's Walk on Water. Mogg and Way have also issued albums under the moniker Mogg/Way, and have kept UFO afloat in the early 21st century -- with guitarist Vinnie Moore taking Schenker's place. Around the same time, Way issued several solo releases and also resuscitated Waysted. ~ Greg Prato, All Music Guide

Peter 'Pete' Frederick Way (born 7 August 1951, in Enfield, Middlesex) is a bass player. He is the bassist of UFO, Waysted and formerly, Fastway and Ozzy Osbourne.

Way began his career as a studio musician for many artists. He played in bands with friends from high school and later created a band with friends Phil Mogg, Andy Parker and Mick Bolton. This became the original UFO lineup. After two studio albums with their original guitarist, the band then recruited the guitar wunderkid Michael Schenker from Scorpions. Later the band signed on guitarist/keyboardist and long time friend Paul Raymond. The group released many albums and singles and had two UK top 40 hits[1].

Disliking the more melodic direction UFO were taking in the early eighties, Pete jumped ship to form Fastway with former Motorhead guitarist "Fast" Eddie Clarke. Pete was unable to extricate himself from a contract he signed with Chrysalis and stepped down to play bass for Ozzy Osbourne.

In 1982 Pete formed the punningly titled Waysted with Fin More, Paul Raymond, Frank Noon and Ronnie Kayfield. Their debut album Vices was released in 1982 and reached #78 in the UK charts. The band's third album Save your Prayers, featuring Danny Vaughn in place of the departed Fin and former UFO guitarist Paul Chapman, was their most successful in America where it reached #185.

In 1992 he joined Phil Mogg in the reformed UFO and released the High Stakes & Dangerous Men album. Pete remains in the band to this day. However he wasn't able to take part in the 2009 tours for UFO's album The Visitor due to a medical condition which affects his liver.

Way commonly uses Gibson Thunderbird basses which are renowned for the hard edged rock tone; however he recently commented that he has been using an Epiphone Thunderbird as he found it seemed to have a fatter tone. He has also been known to use basses by Ibanez, most notably a pink Ibanez Iceman bass.
