Biography

Peter Laughner was an important, and still overlooked, figure in the birth of American punk and new wave. As a singer, songwriter, and performer in numerous Cleveland bands, he was probably the single biggest catalyst in the birth of Cleveland's alternative rock scene in the mid-'70s. Roughly speaking, Laughner's work melded the street-life aesthetic of Lou Reed and the Velvet Underground with folk, roots-rock, art-rock, and even singer-songwriter influences. His legacy is difficult for the masses to appreciate, however, and not just because his premature death meant that very little recorded material emerged during his lifetime. It's all because his talents were too disparate to be easily pigeonholed and, until recently, repackaged for the CD era, despite a wealth of unreleased material.

An accomplished guitarist and moving Reed-meets-Springsteen sort of vocalist, Laughner gigged with numerous bands during the early and mid-'70s, including Cinderella Backstreet, Peter & the Wolves, Friction, and Rocket from the Tombs. The last band, which also included David Thomas and future members of the Dead Boys, has been belatedly recognized as one of the earliest forerunners of punk and new wave with its bridge between Stooges-like hard rock and sounds that were simultaneously more primitive and arty. Rocket broke up, however, before making any recordings (although some have since been released). Laughner was also a founding member of Pere Ubu, although he only appeared on their first two singles before leaving.

Laughner died of acute pancreatitis, brought on by drug and alcohol use, in June 1977, while still in his mid-20s. He's mostly remembered for his pre-punk creations -- "Ain't It Fun," which he performed with (and helped write for) Rocket From the Tombs, was covered by Guns n' Roses in the 1990s. But actually, his most affecting performances were those he performed solo on guitar, on various unreleased recordings, some of which surfaced on a hard-to-find album in the early '80s. Some of these, along with representative work from other facets of his career, were finally made available in the 1990s on the Take the Guitar Player for a Ride compilation. ~ Richie Unterberger, All Music Guide

Peter Laughner (August 22, 1952June 22, 1977) was an American guitarist, songwriter and singer.

A native of Cleveland, Ohio, Laughner remains a rather little known figure; nonetheless, Richie Unterberger described him as "probably the single biggest catalyst in the birth of Cleveland's alternative rock scene in the mid-'70s."[1]

Music Career

Laughner led a variety of groups. Among them were Mr. Charlie, Cinderella Backstreet, Peter & The Wolves, The Blue Drivers and Friction. However, his most enduring contributions were to Rocket From The Tombs and the early work of Pere Ubu. In addition to all this, he wrote for Creem magazine.[2]

Laughner was a voracious rock fan and writer, and was heavily influenced by Lester Bangs's writings. Like Bangs, Laughner worshiped Lou Reed, but also drew inspiration from folk and blues figures such as Robert Johnson and Woody Guthrie. He was a unique, visceral lead guitarist whose greatest influence was Fairport Convention guitarist Richard Thompson.

Laughner was briefly considered as a replacement for Richard Lloyd when he departed Television [3], a band whom he championed from their earliest days.

Death

Laughner had severe drug and alcohol abuse problems that ultimately led to his death by acute pancreatitis in 1977 at the age of 24. Lester Bangs wrote a eulogy for him. [4]

Rumors to the effect that Laughner was despondent, even suicidal, at the time of his death have been contradicted by Laughner's last known message, written and mailed to Cleveland singer Ruby Port on the evening prior to his death. This letter revealed his intent to move to a retreat in the Ohio countryside, where he could write new music as well as rest and regain his health.

Recordings

Laughner's only known entrance into a recording studio was for the Pere Ubu single sessions, though he left behind countless lo-fi live, rehearsal, and demo recordings. In 1994, Tim/Kerr label released Take the Guitar Player for a Ride[5], a 15 track compilation drawn from these tapes. This compilation has since gone out of print. Fans continue to circulate bootleg recordings and a Cleveland-based label, Handsome Productions, offers a comprehensive collection of his music on CD, officially endorsed by his estate.

As of 2007, the Smog Veil record label is reported to be releasing a Laughner box set (with tapes procured from Handsome Productions, David Thomas, Tim Wright, and others) which may materialize in 2010.

In addition to solo recordings, Laughner's guitar and vocal work is available in Rocket from the Tombs' album "The Day the Earth Met the Rocket from the Tombs."[6]
