(b Crowborough, 25 June 1921; d Frome, 14 Aug 1984). English composer. A pupil of Boulanger in Paris (1947-8), he taught at the GSM and Birmingham and Reading universities and wrote neo-classical operas (The Clandestine Marriage, 1971), as well as orchestral and chamber pieces and much church music. His scores possess a strong, individual lyricism.
