Music Encyclopedia:

Petrus Tritonius

(b Bolzano, c1465; d ?Hall, c1525). Austrian composer. A humanist scholar, he probably studied at Vienna and Ingolstadt universities and later held various teaching posts. With Celtis's guidance he composed four-voice settings of Horatian odes in note-against-note style, strictly observing the classical metres and quantities. They were published in 1507. His Hymnarius (1524), the oldest-known printed Catholic hymnbook, contains the texts of 131 hymns with blank staves on which the melodies could be written.
