The modern generalized meaning 'extraordinary, remarkable'
(Interest in the race has been phenomenal—York Press, 2002 [Old English (up to 1150)C])
is now the dominant one, although it retains little of the notion of its meaning in technical (especially philosophical) contexts, in which the meaning is 'perceived by the senses'.
(Every event has a physical cause which is enough to bring it about—without holding that there can (even in principle) be an explanation of phenomenal consciousness in physical terms—T. Crane, 2001).
