A piece for piano and four other instruments. The outstanding Classical works are those for piano and wind instruments by Mozart (k 452) and Beethoven (op. 16), but the combination of piano and string quartet is more usual. Among the finest works for this medium are the quintets of Schumann, Brahms, Dvořák, Franck, Fauré, Elgar, Bloch and Shostakovich. Perhaps the most familiar piano quintet is Schubert's ‘Trout’ Quintet d 667, for piano, violin, viola, cello and double bass.
