(b Béthune, c 1510; d Madrid, 5 Oct 1564). Franco-Flemish composer. A choirboy at Arras Cathedral (1525) he was choirmaster at Tours (1539) and Tournai (1545) cathedrals, and, from 1559, master of Philip II's Flemish chapel in Madrid. Of his many motets, the earliest have the attenuated lines and full textures of Ockeghem and the shorter phrases and voice-pairings of Josquin, while the later ones are closer to Gombert in combining elegant melody with constant imitation. He also composed many masses and Parisian chansons.
