Pierre Lallement, who had previously dabbled in making baby carriages, invented the velocipede, better known today as the bicycle. According to historical accounts, he saw people using a rather awkward wheeled vehicle, called a dandy horse. So he then added the basic components of today's bicycles to create a working bicycle.

All early bicycles were made of wood. French mechanic Pierre Lallement obtained the world's first patent for a bicycle while living in New Haven, Connecticut in 1866. It was a crude wooden bicycle with two small carriage wheels and pedals attached directly to the front axle.
