Dictionary of Dance: Pilar López

López, Pilar (b San Sebastian, 4 June 1912 (some sources say 1906)). Spanish dancer, choreographer, and sister of legendary dancer La Argentinita. She studied with J. Castelão in Madrid and danced with her sister's company until La Argentinita's death in 1945. In 1946 she formed her own company, Ballet Español, which trained many of Spain's leading male dancers, including J. Greco, M. Vargas, and A. Gades who all subsequently formed their own companies. She herself was a dancer of great elegance, energy, and style, and also choreographed many works including Le Tricorne and El amor brujo (both to music by de Falla) and a setting of Rodrigo's Concierto de Aranjuez.
