Pinakes

Expensively painted wooden flats, especially those fitting between the columns of the Hellenistic stage front. At Delos, on a stage with thirteen columns, each of the pinakes would have been 2.5 cm (1 inch) thick, 2.6 m (8.5 feet) high, and 1.5 m (5 feet) wide. There they were called, confusingly, skenai and kept in a neighbouring building when not in use.
