Antonyms: playgirl
| Photography Encyclopedia: Playboy |
Playboy, legendary men's magazine launched by Hugh Hefner (b. 1926) in November 1953, with Marilyn Monroe (clothed) on the cover, and a 1948 nude photograph of her by Tom Kelley (b. 1914) as the first of its celebrated centrefolds. Playboy evolved an antirepressive, hedonistic philosophy, its graphic and photographic images seeking to combine traditional erotic fantasy with girl-next-door wholesomeness. It backed its appeal to well-educated, affluent males with serious interviews (Castro, Martin Luther King, Malcolm X, Nabokov), articles by major writers (Amis, Mailer, Updike), and photographs by the likes of Friedlander, Newton, and Ritts. Circulation topped 6 million in the early 1970s, but later sagged as competition from more blatantly pornographic rivals intensified.
