Union General Alfred Pleasonton graduated from West point in
1844. Among his class of 25 graduating cadets, he ranked 7th.
Pleasonton was a participant in the Battle of Antietam in 1862.
Little did he or any other soldier know that Antietam would be a
historic battle. It's almost 25,000 casualties in a single day, has
never been surpassed by any battle, anywhere, in future by US
combat history. Pleasonton was also in charge of the Union's
cavalry Corps at the Battle of Gettysburg.
