poetics

  (pō-ĕt'ĭks) pronunciation
n. (used with a sing. or pl. verb)
  1. Literary criticism that deals with the nature, forms, and laws of poetry.
  2. A treatise on or study of poetry or aesthetics.
  3. The practice of writing poetry; poetic composition.

 
 

The linguistic, literary, and theoretical resources used in representation; hence geographical poetics, which, at its most simple, has as its subject the varieties of language in which geography has been, continues to be, and ought to be, written.

 

poetics [poh‐et‐iks], the general principles of poetry or of literature in general, or the theoretical study of these principles. As a body of theory, poetics is concerned with the distinctive features of poetry (or literature as a whole), with its languages, forms, genres, and modes of composition. A theorist of poetry or literature may be called a poetician. See also aesthetics, criticism.
