Through the process of frost cracking, periglacial surfaces may exhibit polygonal areas of ground separated by cracks. If these cracks fill with debris, the ground rises around the wedges when the permafrost expands. These are sand-wedge polygons. In more humid environments, if the cracks are filled with ice, the feature is an ice-wedge polygon.
