pop for
a pop
[Middle English poppen, from pop, a blow, stroke, of imitative origin.]

[Short for PAPA.]
Informal.Short paid announcement by a radio or television advertiser that may be of special interest to the viewer or listener. For example, during the holiday season a common pop-in by advertisers may be, "Company X wishes you and your family a very merry Christmas and a happy new year." In this example, there is no mention of the company's product, but the viewer or listener is informed that Company X is the sponsor of the message. Also called image liner.

noun
noun
The term as used today first emerged in the mid-1950s with reference to popular culture and was explored materially and theoretically by avant-garde designers, architects, artists, writers, and critics such as those associated with the Independent Group in Britain. Commonly associated with American artists such as Andy Warhol and Claes Oldenburg it first entered widespread usage in connection with design in the 1960s. In this context it encapsulated the contemporary consumerist spirit of a period in which brightly coloured, ephemeral, iconoclastic and fun mass-produced products, fashion, furniture, and interiors were increasingly widely available, particularly in the increasingly influential market sector catering for affluent younger consumers. Fashion designers such as Mary Quant, John Stephen, Zandra Rhodes, and the lively boutiques of Carnaby Street, London, provided the opportunity for such consumers (male and female) to purchase stylish, mass-produced clothing that embraced such ideals, from miniskirts to Mod suits. Supported by increasingly seductive advertising, television programmes, films, and glossy magazines aimed at this powerful consumer group, Pop seriously undermined the aesthetic characteristics of Modernism with its emphasis on ‘form follows function’, ‘Truth To Materials’, the elimination of unnecessary decoration, and the use of a restrained palette. In connection with this it also ran in opposition to more ‘official’ notions of ‘Good Design’, such as those embraced by the Council of Industrial Design (see Design Council) in Britain, the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Compasso d'Oro in Italy and others (see also Design Awards). Pop was influential in terms of its iconoclastic outlook in relation to style, materials, and modes of manufacture. It impacted upon the Anti-Design movement of the radical avant-garde in northern Italy as well as a number of the tenets of Postmodernism that underlay much design thinking of the latter decades of the 20th century.
POP (printing-out paper) was coined by Ilford (Britannia) in 1891. The term refers to printed-out gelatin silver chloride paper stabilized with citric acid, introduced by William Abney in 1882, and manufactured with a baryta substrate by Emil Obernetter from 1884. A collodion variant (J. B. Obernetter, 1868) was available from 1890 to the early 1920s. POP prints were usually gold toned to enhance stability and convert the harsh red-brown image colour to a more pleasing purple grey; later ‘self-toning’ papers incorporated gold chloride in the emulsion. POP was the most popular ready-sensitized paper of the 1890s, replacing albumen for portraiture and amateur work. It was widely available until the 1920s, but made by Kodak until the late 1980s and by Guilleminot until 1997. The Chicago Albumen Company currently supplies specialist silver citrate paper.
