Portuguese profanity is an assortment of words which is considered vulgar, blasphemous, inflammatory or offensive in the Portuguese language.
The most common of them –the ones universally used in the different dialects and variants of the Portuguese - originated from Latin radicals, as well from other Indo-European sources and are usually cognate with peninsular Spanish profanity.
There are also Portuguese curse words that originated from South American Amerindian or West and Central African languages; these are found in other Portuguese speaking countries than Portugal, like Brazil, Cape Verde, Guinea-Bissau, São Tomé and Príncipe, Angola or Mozambique even though some of these non-Indo-European originated ones made it to enter the peninsular Portuguese.
In case of Brazil, several neologycal curse words were borrowed not only from Ameridian or African languages but also from Italian, German or French, due to the Italian and Central-European immigration to Brazil in the late XIX century, and, paradoxally, due to the fact French used to be a lingua franca for intellectual Brazilians and Brazilian international diplomacy in the past.
Portuguese profanity, just like in any other Western language, is much marked by its sexist character. Words that refer to male homosexuality and female sexuality in general –and even the ones referred to the female genitalia- are the ones mostly adopted as inflammatory words while the ones that refer to heterosexual male sexuality are used as positive adjectivations. Coprological (excretion-related) terms are used either with negative and positive meaning, this difference depending only of the context in which they are used.
Profanities in Portuguese are referred as profanidades, chulice, termos chulos, baixo calão, termos de baixo calão, linguagem de baixo calão, obscenidades, vulgaridades. Palavrão is a coarse word, and dizer/falar palavrões is to use obscene language. Xingar/Praguejar is to swear, to curse. Insulto/Xingamento/Impropério coarse or insulting word.

Excrement
- Amarelar, arregar: from color yellow, associated with intestinal troubles. Show cowardice, lack of fighting spirit, to quit.
- Cagada: past participle of "cagar" (to shit). From Latin cacare, meaning to the act of evacuate feces, or to the feces themselves quite after being evacuated.
As a curse word, it may have completely different meanings depending on the context it is used. A cagada can mean either a very lousily done job (“your artwork is a cagada”) or a big strike of luck (“Man, four aces, what a cagada!”), or the well matching result of a measurement taken by guess or naked eye (“He didn’t do the structural calculation for this column, he did it in the cagada”).
“Embostelhada” is a less offensive term to designate something that went wrong[citation needed].
- Cagar (also dar um cagão, soltar um barro/barrão/barroso, descarregar a carga{fact} = To take a dump. Fazer cocô/ caca = poop, doo doo; less offensive, even childish. Borrar-se/ borrar as calças/ Cagar nas calças = To shit your pants, being scared.
- Merda: Literally shit, vulgar word for faeces. Lousy job or workpiece; disagreeable situation, confusion, fiasco; stupid or incompetent person.
- Titica = bird's feces, used as in ter titica na cabeça to be a shithead.
- Merdinbuca: (arcaic) A contraction of the expression “merda em boca” (shit on mouth), it used, during the Middle Ages, to be one of the most aggressive profanities in Portugal.
- Mijada: past participle of Mijar, to piss. Vulgar terms for urination and to urine. Severe reprehension.
- Mijão: pisser. Said of cowards.

- Boiola: Used to designate delicate little boys, young lads working in theatrical sketches and musicals in the late 19th and early 20th century. - Filho da Puta: Latin filius, preposition de plus the feminine article a from the form illa and Vulgar Latin putta. The son of a sexually loose woman or prostitute. Similar to the English “son of a bitch”, “whoreson”, Spanish "hijo de puta", Italian "figlio di puttana" and French "fils de putain", "fils de pute". Portuguese also have the version "filho duma égua", “son of a mare”, from Latin equa.
- Foder: A verb. It comes from the Latin verb foedere, futuere which means to open holes in the land to seed it. This verb acquired the meaning of “to have sexual intercourse”, being an equivalent for the English “to fuck”. It is also used in the expression “vá-se foder”/”vai-te foder”, which means the same as the English “fuck you” and “go fuck yourself”. The form “foda-se” can be equivalent to “fuck it” or “go fuck yourself” while the expression “(Ah/Oh) Que se foda!” means “fuck it. I don't care”. It's cognate to the Spanish joder, the Italian fottere and French foutre. In Brazil, this word is sometimes wrongly spelled “fuder” due to its prosody. Foda: the act of fucking, can be a positive or negative adjective. - Porra: Porra and esporrar. Both relate to the English nouns cum, spunk, and jizz and to the verb to cum, respectively. "Porra" is also constantly used by Brazilians as an expletive, like the English "Fuck!" “oh!” and “wow!” and it has two abbreviations, pô and orra, which are not considered profanity. Porra, as an expletive, sometimes is considered as offensive as the English damn. In Brazil, the noun Gozo, and verb gozar - also might express jizz, to ejaculate; for a male or female to cum, to have an orgasm; from Lat. gaudium, same root as to "enjoy" and "gaudy". In Portugal the expressions estar lá or chegar lá are equivalent to English "to cum".
- Punheta: Male masturbation; hand job. Other verbal expressions equivalent to jerk off and jack off are bater punheta; tocar uma; bater uma. - Puta: A shorter, or abbreviation, for prostitute, which comes directly from Latin. However, since the curse word puta does not refer only to prostitutes, but to sexually loose women in general (being thus an equivalent to the English word whore), it was argued that this word has a different Latin origin, being actually the past participle of the verb ponere (to put). In such case, the actual meaning for puta should be of someone who was put away, or put aside, certainly in reference to the single young females who were expelled by their parents after losing their virginity. Some language experts argue that in many languages, words that used to designate simply a girl became pejorative as time went by, an example is the French fille sometimes used for whore, but it can simply mean girl, from Latin filia, daughter. - Sapatão: Differently from Germanic languages that associate homosexuality with perversion and sin, like the word "faggot" that comes from a bundle of sticks used to burn homosexuals in Christian bonfires, Romance languages usually have jocose terms that ironize homosexuals as degenerates who envy the other gender's condition. That's why in Portuguese exists the association between deers, delicate mammals and male homosexuals. And that's why derogatory terms for lesbians like sapatão, sapatona botinão, numero 43, bico largo 42 are literally translated as "huge manly shoes / manly boots". Other terms are mulher-macho, mulé-macho, muié-macho, marimacho, machona, virago = dyke, virago. Caminhoneira truck dyke. Lésbica, safista, sapho, tríbade, are neutral terms like lesbian, sapphist, tribade. lésbica baton & rímel, femme, femina, sapatinha mini saia, sandalinha are equivalent to "femme", "lipstick lesbian".
- Viado or Paneleiro: Viado, maybe veado misspelled (deer, in English, although probably associated from a contraction of "transviado", strayed, runaway), and paneleiro, (a manufacturer of panels) are the slangs for homosexual, being the equivalents for the English fag. Both words are used on both sides of the Atlantic; however viado being more commonly used in Brazil while paneleiro is more used in Portugal, other Portuguese-speaking countries and Portuguese colonies in Brazil. The image of a deer is jocosely associated with young gay males. The term bambi is used to designate a young bottom, a twink, just like efebo and éphèbe is used in allusion to Ancient Greece ephebos.
Body parts
- Buceta: Actually a misspell for boceta, which originally means a small leather purse or box. It's the rough name for the female genitalia in Brazil, while in Portugal the name most commonly used is Cona, from Latin cunnus. The similarity with English cunt is most likely coincidental. The word boceta comes from Provençal bosseta and has the same Latin root as the English partially cognates "box" and "bush" and the French "boîte" and "boussole" (box and compass). English "box" comes from the Late Latin buxis, buxidis, (small box made of wood), a derivation from buxus, a sort of bush. The French boîte, boiste, bossete, Provençal bosseta, Portuguese boceta, Spanish bujeta and the Italian bosta, busta come from Vulgar Latin buxida, buxita, buxeta. English "bush" comes partly from Old English busc, partly from Old French bois, wood (Latin and Germanic origin) and partly of Scandinavian origin, akin to Danish busk and possibly Dutch bosch. The French bois (piece of wood and woods, forest), bouquet, buis (a plant) and buisson (bush), Italian bosco and bosso, Portuguese bosque (thicket, grove, forest) buxo (a type of plant) and arbusto (bush), Provençal boscs, all come from Late Latin buscus and originally from buxus, buxum, a type of bush and the woods. Buceta and bucetinha are semantically equivalent to cunt; while other terms for vagina can be less offensive like: Xana (pussy), Xoxota (twat), xota, buça, tcheca, xeca, xavasca. Xereca = snatch. Racha, fenda = slit. Jocose terms = passarinha, piriquita, bacurinha, perereca. Slav names and Slav toponymies can be associated with the vagina due to their sounding, like the case of checa, tcheca and chechênia, xexênia.
- Bunda: One of the few African-originated Portuguese profanity words that made it to enter the slang use in the Peninsula, it refers to the whole gluteal regions, the buttocks. The term cu from Lat. culus used to designate the buttocks and anus in Latin, but now in Portuguese it can be used to specify the anus, while bunda and other terms can designate the nates. Polite terms to designate the nates are Nádegas, glúteos, pódice. Retaguarda, traseira/o, derrière are equivalent to behind, hindquarters, posterior, rear end, backside. Bumbum = booty or bum. Bunda, rabo, rabinho = ass, butt, tail end. Pandeiro, buzanfa, popo, popozão, popozete = keister, arse, buttocks. Assento, sentador = seat. Poupança = tooshie, tush, fanny. Calipígeo/a = callipygian, callipygous. Having beautifully proportioned buttocks.
- Caralho: Greek charax and Latin caraculus. Cognate to the Spanish Carajo. A caralho is originally a nautical term, referring to the crow's nest in the top of the mainmast of a caravel. Since it was an ingrate job to patrol the horizon from the crow's nest, the expression “vá para o caralho” (“go to the caralho”) began being used by people to rid of an unwanted peer in an unpolite, inflammatory way. Also, caralho turned into a slang for penis as well. Pau, pica (Br), piça (Pt), rola, cacete, verga, vergalhão = cock, dick, dong, prick. Jocose = Países Baixos, Neerlândia (Netherlands), ripa, piroca, pistola, peru, ganso, as in "afogar o ganso", trabuco, nabo, mandioca, benga, jeba, sagatiba, bigola, bilau. Puerile terms = pipi, piupiu, pinto, pintinho, piupiuzin, pipizinho, peruzinho, pirulito, bigolinho, bigulin,. Caralho and Cacete (prick) can be used as an expletive just like "Goddamn it", "What the fuck?" and "Holy shit/crap". - Cu: Latin culus, Cognate to similar terms in other Latin languages, like the Italian and Spanish culo and French cul, it literally means anus. It is usually used as in “vá levar no cu” (Portugal) ou “vai tomar no cu” (Brazil), meaning go take up your ass. Other jocose terms for anus are anel (ring), loló, forébs, fiofó, xibiu, rabete, rabicó, rabiote, furosquete, rosca, rosquinha, pocinho, buraquinho.
- Pentelho: Cognate to the Spanish Pendejo, it means pubic hair, as in the original Latin word penticulus – scientifically the name for genital follicles, which is the strict meaning of this word in the Iberian Peninsula. In Brazilian Portuguese it's also used to refer to an annoying kid or annoying young person while in Hispanic America it refers to annoying –and, obnoxious- people of any ages.
- Saco: Latin saccus. It literally means sack and relates to the scrotum ("nutsack"). It's majorly used as an expletive for tedious people or tedious jobs or situations, like in "Que saco!" ("What a bore!") or "Fulano é um saco!" ("John Doe bores me to death!"), "Você é um saco!" ("You suck!") In Portugal, the name most commonly used term is Colhões, Latin Cōleōnēs. Escroto (scrotum) may express a "scumbag" or "jerk". Bagos can also be used to designate testicles and it's equivalent to nuts, while the equivalent to balls would be bolas.

- Baiano and Paraíba: Literally, there are the toponymical words for people born in the Brazilian states of Bahia and Paraíba. Being Bahia the host region for the Portuguese colonial administration of Brazil, the word Baiano began to be identified to everything which is old-fashioned, out-of-season, outdated, out-competed or weird, as well to cultural backwardness and remnants of slavery. Used in an offensive context against mixed-race Brazilians, it basically includes all the Northeastern region of Brazil. Baiano is mostly used in São Paulo, while Paraíba is mainly used in Rio de Janeiro.
- Branquelo: It is used by non-White people as a slur against European Caucasoids and European descendant Brazilians. It's equivalent to the English expressions "cracker", "whitey" and "honkey". Leite azedo, sour milk is used like milky (leitoso, lácteo) for Whites. Alemão and Nórdico, German and Nordic are sometimes used for naturally blond Whites by non-White people with the same semantic load as "whitey".
- Brazuca: Tupiniquim, Sudaca. Generally depreciative. In Brazil may be use for self-irony or self-deprecating.
- Bretão: term that sometimes assumes a pejorative connotation designating obnoxious British men like a group of hooligans. Britânico Anguloso, Britânicos dos traços ou feições angulosas e dentição ruim; Inglês cara-de-chuchu
- Bife: meaning steak. Used in Portugal in relation to people from the UK, derived from the Portuguese reading of BEF.
- Carcamano: It is used in Brazil as a slur against white Brazilians of other ancestry than Portuguese or Spaniard, specially the Italian-descended Brazilians. This word entered the Brazilian Portuguese from the Spanish language, probably via Spaniard immigration to Brazil, and it was adopted to point out a difference between the cultured, educated Portuguese-descended White Brazilian elite and the Italian and German immigrants to Brazilian plantations, people considered to be rough, illiterate, uneducated and awkward when compared to the first group. Spaghetti and macarronada, maccaroni are jocosely used for Italian descendants.
- Chamuça: Lusitanian slur against people from India, it actually means Samosa.
- Chinoca: Lusitanian slur against Chinese people.
- Chucrute,Fritz: From French choucroute meaning Sauerkraut. Slur or jocose term for Germans as well as bratwurst, just like spaghetti is used for Italians. Strudel and pretzel are used for an attractive German descendant just like the terms pão and pão-de-ló, sugarloaf varieties, are used for pretty people. Kaiser boch, schoppen bier and bier garten are expressions that may have a jocose connotation in reference to a drunkard German. Alemão bravo, alemão brigão just like querelle d'allemand, a contention about trifles, soon provoked and soon appeased, are expressions that make the association of Germans with people that fight for no reason. Rigidez/Disciplina alemã makes reference to the Teutonic discipline. Gótico Bárbaro, Godo, Vândalo, jocose expressions that associate Germanic people with Historical Barbarians, a Germanic person to a disagreeable person.
- Français,Françiu/Frufru/Fanfreluche/Ronronrom: jocose expressions for Frenchmen. According to Gilberto Freyre, in the 19th century, the word for French, francês, was associated with dishonest traders and vendors.
- Galego: A person from Galicia, which is a region in Northwest Spain. Slur used against both Portuguese and Spaniards in most of Brazil. In northeastern Brazil this word is not a slur and is usually used as colloquially referring to blond haired people.
- Indiozinho: Little Indian. Offensive slur used by European descendant Brazilians to designate people from Hispanic America.
- Japa: Jap, term mostly used in a jocose context. Also Japinha, Japorunga, Japsy, Nationaro Kido, Jaspion and Nihon. Neuso/a, Neusinho/a, Nês: slur for Eastern Asians whose nationality ends with "nese" or "n" like Japanese, Chinese and Korean.
- Macumbeiro: Nego macumbeiro, mandingueiro, bonequinho de vodu, magia negra, Preto Véio, Exu, Pomba-Gira, cavalo do demo, cão do Inferno, maripadilha: Slurs against African descendants, associating the African culture to voodoo or black magic.
- Mulambo, Maloqueiro : Marginal, Moleque, Maloca, Marginália, Meliante mestiço, Pardo/Pardinho/Escurinho delinquente, meliante, pivete: Offensive expression: Multiracial person involved in crimes.
- Marrano: Offensive expression: filthy Jew or Arab.
- Macaco: Literally, monkey. In the southern half of Brazil, it's a slur against Black people; in Northeast Brazil, it refers to anyone whose profession demands the use of a military-like uniform (policemen, soldiers, armed-forces officers), being the term gorilla (a bigger macaco, or the macaco leader) a slur for high-patent military like Marshalls, Generals and Colonels. Highlighting this fact, gorilla was the very curse word used against the Military Dictators of Brazil from 1964 to 1985. In Portugal, macaco means Brazilian mixed-raced people; in Argentina, macacos are Brazilian people of any races. Macaco (or, “macaco-de-imitação”) has also the meaning of someone who learns things via osmosis, or via imitation.
- Mouro (Moor): Used in North Portugal as a slur against mostly to the Lisbon people, a Algarvians, Alentejans and Andalusians, as well in other Portuguese-speaking countries than Portugal as a slur against Portuguese and Spaniard people as a whole group.
- 'Nego: Corrupted form of Negro, slightly more charged than "black", yet significantly weaker than nigger or nigga. Preto is the term used when referring to black objects. Escurinho has the same semantic load as the term "darky". Tição, Tiziu, brand, dark coal and carvão, charcoal are used for Black people. Nego subaquento, Sovaco-de-preto, Axila-de-nego, and nego do sovaco fedido are examples of disparaging expressions for African descendants, making reference to strong body odor, funky armpits.
- Papista: a Catholic viewd by Traditional Protestants (Papist, Popish). Carola, beato, papa-hóstia, papa-missa: jocose expressions for a fervid Catholic. Polski, self-explanatory. Kozlowski, used for Polish descendants. Pepik is a term that Polish Brazilians use for Czech males. Cara-de-doidovich (Crazy features Slav), Lazlo, Fedorenko, Ladislau, Estanislau, Basílio, Vladislau, Venceslau, Viacheslav, terms used for Slavs. Gostoczyk, gostosovich, gostosovisky, velcronova (Lesbian Slav), tchecoxavásquia, xecaxexênia (A Slav male or female when considered physically attractive). The name of some Slav countries and provinces are used jocoselly for vagina. Cúpula is a reference to members of the Orthodox Church.
- Portuga: Purtuga, Murruga, Tuga, Jocose: An annoying or obnoxious Lusitanian. Seu Manuel padeiro, Seu Samuel da panificadora or Seu Joaquim da padaria, Dona Maria, mulher do padeiro.
- Rissol: Lusitanian slur against Russian People.
- Salomão: slur used against Jews, as well as estrela-de-davi, signo-de-salomão, judeuzinho, nibchar, bachiyr, bachuwr, povo escolhido and bagel. Turco/Judeu/Árabe Avarento, Pão-duro, Mão-de-vaca: Turkish, Jewish and Arab people taken as greedy, avaricious.
