A bucky grid is a radiologic instrument made up of an alternating lead and plastic grid placed between the object being imaged and the xray photon detector. It allows a radiologist to use higher frequency radiation while minimizing the resultant scatter of xrays that normally accompanies using higher frequency xrays. The use of this grid enables a radiologist to to image denser objects (e.g. obese individuals, spine imagining from a chest image) then would normally be possible with traditional radiography. It is very similar to the concept employed by polarized sun glasses. Note: for a further discussion of this topic see Chap 4 of Squire's Fundamentals of Radiology.

Dr Gustave Bucky is the original inventor of the x-Ray grid. He made this in 1913. He was born September 3, 1880.
