Pressure Cooker claims to be Boston’s original old-school reggae band. The group formed in 1997 with a shared passion of Jamaican ska, rocksteady, and reggae music of the sixties and seventies. With these roots as the guide, Pressure Cooker crafted a Boston old-school reggae sound, supposedly reminiscent of the classics and distinguished by infectious rhythm and memorable songs.[citation needed]
Pressure Cooker has performed live for an over a decade, and independently released five full-length CDs. Their sixth full-length album was to be released in January 2009. Fronted by lead singer Craig Akira Fujita and backed by a core of Boston-area musicians, the band has played to audiences at clubs and festivals spanning from New England to Chicago. Over the years, Pressure Cooker has played in support of artists of reggae music including Toots & the Maytals, Burning Spear, Gregory Isaacs, The Wailers, Prince Buster, Derrick Morgan, The Skatalites, Culture, Laurel Aitken, Eek-A-Mouse, Julian Marley, and Sister Carol.
Pressure Cooker music has reached audiences worldwide through DJs, distribution outlets such as CD Baby & iTunes Music store, niche CD compilations in the U.S., Japan, France, Germany and Poland, and the Chicago label Jump Up Records for the 2004 album Burning Fence. The ABC Family network included songs from the 2003 album Committed in two episodes of the television program Knock First. Pressure Cooker received nominations to the Boston Music Awards in 1999, 2000, and 2004.[citation needed]
On April 1, 2006, Pressure Cooker held a CD release party for Future’s History, the band’s fifth full-length CD, at Harper’s Ferry in Allston, Massachusetts.
Their newest recording, "What She Wants", was released by Jump Up Records in late January 2009.
