  1. Precedence, especially established by order of importance or urgency.
    1. An established right to precedence.
    2. An authoritative rating that establishes such precedence.
  2. A preceding or coming earlier in time.
  3. Something afforded or deserving prior attention.

A particular order, or sequence, in which things take place (items processed, users served, etc.). A priority is based on a predetermined assignment of value, or importance, to different types of events and people.

system used in an auction market, in which the first bid or offer price is executed before other bid and offer prices, even if subsequent orders are larger. Orders originating off the floor (see off-floor order) of an exchange also have priority over on-floor orders.

Legal precedence; having preferred status. Generally, upon foreclosure , lenders are repaid according to priority.


Example: Abel’s home was foreclosed and sold for $25,000.
Unpaid taxes and attorney’s fees were accorded priority, and paid in full. The rest of the sales proceeds was applied against the first mortgage.
There was nothing for the second mortgage , because it was lower in priority.
