The Pulitzer Prizes were established in 1917 by the will of Joseph Pulitzer (1847–1911), publisher of the New York World, for outstanding achievements in American journalism, letters, music (beginning in 1943), and drama. The prizes are bestowed by an advisory board that has exercised its broad powers to create new award categories and to withhold any award where entries fall below its standards of excellence.
