  • p. enteropathy — of swine, see porcine intestinal adenomatosis; a disease of weaned foals presenting with lethargy, weight loss, a varying degree of fever, inappetance, a potbellied appearance with a rough coat, colic, diarrhea and ventral edema associated with a pronounced hypoproteinemia. The disease is a protein losing enteropathy associated with a proliferation of crypt epithelial cells in the terminal small intestine and thickening of the intestine at this site. The causative agent, Lawsonia intracellularis, is present in proliferating cells. The disease responds to a long treatment course with erythromycin and rifampicin.
  • p. exudative pneumonia — of lambs see enzootic pneumonia.
  • p. hemorrhagic enteropathy — an acute or peracute disease of recently weaned pigs and also of replacement gilts. Characterized by anemia and dysentery, and a proliferative, hemorrhagic lesion in the terminal ileum and proximal colon, and a high death rate. The underlying intestinal abnormality is porcine intestinal adenomatosis caused by Lawsonia intracellularis but the reason for the hemorrhagic complication is not known.
  • p. ileitis — see porcine intestinal adenomatosis.
  • p. interstitial pneumonia — see enzootic pneumonia.
  • p. kidney disease — important disease of salmonids; caused by a pre-spore stage of a myxosporean species presumably carried by other fish inhabiting the same waters.
  • p. optic neuropathy — a raised gray mass on the surface of the optic disk but there is no effect on vision.
  • p. phase — in uterine activity; called also follicular phase. The lining epithelium of the uterus hypertrophies and becomes congested and edematous.
  • p. stomatitis — see proliferative stomatitis.
