propping agent (′präp·iŋ ′ā·jənt)

(petroleum engineering) Sand, gravel, or particles of other material (such as sintered bauxite or ceramic beads) suspended in drilling fluid during formation fracturing to keep (prop) open the cracks in the rock when the fluid is withdrawn. Also known as proppant.
