Macro- and micro-organisms are the living things that are found
in compost heaps. Micro-organisms include actinomycetes,
mesophilic, psychrophilic and thermophilic bacteria as well as
many- and single-celled fungi. Macro-organisms range from
earthworms to feather-winged, ground and rove beetles, millipedes,
slugs, snails, sow bugs and springtails.
