The history of Puddle of Mudd's rise to popularity could provide the definition of being in the right place at the right time and with the right talent. Their major label debut album, Come Clean, sold more than 100,000 copies in its first week of release. The album went on to sell more than two million copies and remained on Billboard 's Top 200 Albums chart for more than a year.

Singer and guitarist Wes Scantlin formed Puddle of Mudd in 1993 with a group of musicians in Kansas City, Missouri. The group gained some notoriety in Kansas City and locally released two CDs—Stuck in 1994 and Abrasive in 1997—in an effort to garner attention from a major record label. The band came up with its name after severe flooding turned the entire first floor of their rehearsal space, which was located next to the Missouri River, into one big puddle of mud.

In 1999 the members of the band had decided to call it quits, and Scantlin was ready to move to New Orleans, Louisiana, to manage his girlfriend's career as a stripper and to work in his cousin's bar. But before he headed south, Scantlin decided to accept his friend's invitation to go to the Family Values concert in Kansas City, featuring Limp Bizkit and Korn. While there, he used a fake pass to get backstage at the show, where he met a security guard for Limp Bizkit. Scantlin gave the guard a copy of his band's demo tape to give to Limp Bizkit singer Fred Durst, who was starting his own record label.

After the show, Scantlin continued with his plan to move to New Orleans. He was on his way when he received a phone call from a friend who told him that Durst had left messages trying to reach him. Durst had not only listened to Scantlin's tape, but he liked what he heard and wanted the band to go to Los Angeles to meet him. Durst's interest didn't convince the former members to regroup, so Scantlin went to Los Angeles alone. Scantlin, with Durst's help, recruited a new group that included bassist Douglas Ardito, guitarist Paul Phillips, and drummer Greg Upchurch.

Ardito, who grew up in Bedford, Massachusetts, had previously played with a band called Cellophane. Up-church, from Kingston, Oklahoma, had performed with Chris Cornell on his 1999 Euphoria Morning tour and was a former member of the band Eleven. Phillips, from Jacksonville, Florida, knew Durst from the local music scene there and was asked to audition. "When Wes went out to L.A., I got the call, flew out there, and we jammed for awhile," Phillips told Phil Ascott of Guitarist online. "We wrote 'Control' [the band's first single] on the second day we were together. We clicked really quickly, which was cool."

With all the members of Puddle of Mudd in place, they signed with Durst's Flawless Entertainment label, part of Interscope Records, and recorded their debut. Before its release, they began touring in May of 2001 to generate some initial exposure for the band. Their first date was in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, and they continued to tour for the next few months. On August 28, 2001, Come Clean, which was produced by John Kurzweg, arrived in stores. Along with the debut single, "Control," Come Clean launched Puddle of Mudd's career into overdrive.

"The whole project was very low profile at the beginning," Ardito told Arturo Perez at KludgeSound.com. "We were definitely not on top of the label's priorities once we started, but then 'Control,' our first single, started getting played on the radio and on TV, and things started rolling."

Durst continued to support Puddle of Mudd at every opportunity. He directed the video for "Control" in his hometown of Jacksonville, Florida, and invited Scantlin to join him and former Led Zeppelin guitarist Jimmy Page on stage at the MTV Europe Awards to perform the Led Zeppelin song "Thank You." Scantlin's appearance gave Puddle of Mudd even more exposure, particularly at an international level.

In 2002 Puddle of Mudd released their next single, "Blurry," which soared to number one on Billboard's Modern Rock chart. Scantlin wrote the song about missing spending time with his son Jordan, who also appeared in the Durst-directed video. Puddle of Mudd followed "Blurry" with the release of two more singles from Come Clean—"Drift and Die" and "She Hates Me." That same year, Puddle of Mudd won four Billboard Music Awards, including Rock Artist of the Year, Rock Track of the Year for "Blurry," Modern Rock Artist of the Year, and Modern Rock Track of the Year for "Blurry."

The group kept the momentum of the album's success going with an intensive touring schedule that included stints with Korn and Staind. According to Scantlin, the members of the band didn't get wrapped up in the typical over-the-top partying on tour to which many new rock bands succumb. "We're really down-to-earth guys, and all of us have our heads on our shoulders and feet on the ground, and we're almost like choirboys on tour," Scantlin told Stephanie Cabral at Yahoo! LAUNCH.

Following a break from the tour, Puddle of Mudd returned to the recording studio, again with producer John Kurzweg, to work on their follow-up CD, Life on Display, scheduled for release in late 2003. Since it worked so well on Come Clean, Scantlin continued to harvest his own life experiences for subject matter on the next album. "The content of the lyrics is definitely coming from reality and a real place," Scantlin told Joe D'Angelo at MTV.com. "And that's where I kind of write from—real-life situations…. We've all still got problems in our lives that we can get inspiration from."

These "down-to-earth guys" have realized that their fans connect with their "real-life" approach to their material, and they plan to make every effort to stay connected to those fans with their future material. "I'm just trying to crawl under people's skin and make them feel good," Scantlin told Corey Moss at MTV.com.

Ardito echoed the sentiment in an interview with Chris Jisi for Bass Player: "What really matters is the kid who hears your song on the radio, turns it way up, and sings along, while he's cruising down the road to see his girlfriend…. I just want to continue to make music that people keep humming in their heads."

Biography

One of the first acts signed to Limp Bizkit frontman Fred Durst's label, Flawless Records, was the alt-metal quartet Puddle of Mudd -- consisting of Wesley Scantlin (guitar and vocals), Paul Phillips (guitar), Douglas Ardito (bass), and Greg Upchurch (drums). While their songs expectedly contain the rage of such contemporaries as Korn and Rage Against the Machine, Scantlin's voice at times is eerily similar to Nirvana's late, great frontman, Kurt Cobain, containing unmistakable elements of traditional hard rock (unlike the other aforementioned band's penchant for rap). August 2001 saw the release of their major-label debut, Come Clean (which was preceded by the independent release Abrasive), as they embarked on a European tour with Godsmack a month later, before touring the U.S. as part of the Family Values 2001 tour, alongside Stone Temple Pilots, Linkin Park, and Staind. The band subsequently remained somewhat busy, releasing Life on Display in 2003 and Famous in 2007. Two years later, Puddle of Mudd went back into the studio with producer Brian Howes and recorded their fourth studio effort, Volume 4: Songs in the Key of Love and Hate. ~ Greg Prato, Rovi

History

Early years (1992–2000)

Puddle of Mudd was formed on September 13, 1992 in Kansas City by Wes Scantlin (vocals/rhythm guitar), Jimmy Allen (Guitar) Sean Sammon (Bass) and Kenny Burkitt (Drums).[Note 1] The name was inspired by the Missouri River flood, which inundated the band's practice space, and left the floor a big "puddle of mud". The group's first album, Stuck, was released in 1994 on V&R Records. The album was produced by the band and E.J. Rose, and was recorded at Red House Studio in Lawrence, Kansas. It spawned 2 radio singles (the first was "You Don't Know", the second "Drift and Die"), thereby making Puddle of Mudd a local favorite among fans.

Minus Jimmy Allen, the group released a second album, Abrasive, in 1997 on Hardknocks Records. It had eleven tracks, all written by the band, three of which would eventually make it on to Puddle of Mudd's first major label release. These would be the only two albums that exhibit a dirtier, grungier sound, compared to the semi-polished sound of later work. Differences of opinion and other factors led to the breakup of the original Puddle of Mudd by early 1999, leaving Scantlin as the only original member. Wes and friend from the local Kansas city music scene drummer Dennis Dunbar then decided to reform the band with Jimmy Allen late in 1999 and 2000 but shorty fell into differences once again[1]

Come Clean (2001–2002)

Scantlin's start in the music business came after a copy of his demo tape was delivered to Fred Durst. Durst contacted Scantlin, and after hearing that his band had broken up, decided to bring him to California to attempt to put a new band together.

One of the first people Scantlin met upon arriving in California was Doug Ardito, an intern at Interscope Records. Ardito was also in a Boston-based band called Throat Culture. When Scantlin found out about Ardito's bass playing, they decided to work together. They were still in need of a guitarist and drummer.

Fred Durst decided to contact a guitarist he knew from his hometown of Jacksonville, Florida, Paul Phillips, who had formerly played in a local band there called Happy Hour. After getting the call from Durst, Paul decided to try out for Puddle of Mudd, and was accepted, choosing to leave college in order to join. Along with Paul, Shane T-bone Webb (current drummer of Blow it Up) from Jacksonville, FL was brought out to play drums and complete the band. The four began playing together on some of the band's older songs, as well as some new ones. Durst signed the group to another showcase, and then recruited the band to his new record label, Flawless Records. Things did not work out with the Jacksonville drummer, and Josh Freese from A Perfect Circle and The Vandals (and later Guns N' Roses) did the drum tracks for Puddle of Mudd's next album instead. The band later held auditions for a new drummer, which produced Greg Upchurch, an ex-member of Eleven who had also toured with Chris Cornell. Puddle of Mudd released its major-label debut album Come Clean on August 28, 2001. The lead single from the album, "Control" was successful and grabbed the attention of rock music audiences worldwide. It was also the theme song for WWE's Survivor Series 2001.

The second single off the album, "Blurry" Co-written with Jimmy Allen and Doug Ardito, turned out to be Puddle of Mudd's most successful single, reaching #5 on the Billboard Hot 100 and #8 in the United Kingdom. This song was also used in the game Ace Combat 5, published by Namco. "Drift & Die" Co-written with Jimmy Allen was also released as a single and was very successful with rock audiences with the single spending 6 weeks at the #1 on the Mainstream Rock Chart. The fourth single, "She Hates Me" Co-written with Jimmy Allen was released in late 2002 and became a massive hit reaching the #1 spot on the Mainstream Rock Tracks chart, as well as #13 on the Billboard Hot 100.[3]

The group then embarked on a European and American tour as the opening act for Godsmack & Deftones and were also part of the Family Values 2001 tour, alongside the Linkin Park, Stone Temple Pilots and Staind.

Copies of the album were selling well. It was certified Triple Platinum in the U.S. by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) on January 31, 2003, and as of late 2006 total sales worldwide were in excess of 5 million copies.

Life On Display (2003–2005)

Puddle of Mudd's follow up, Life on Display spawned three singles "Away From Me", "Heel Over Head", and "Spin You Around". The album sold below expectations. Although shortly after its release, the record was certified gold and to date has sold over 706,000 copies. Some suggested this was the primary cause of drummer Greg Upchurch's jumping ship when 3 Doors Down came looking for a new drummer.[4] Marisa Miller appears in the music video for "Spin You Around". "Away From Me" was featured in The O.C. in 2004. The song "Nothing Left to Lose" was the official theme song of WWE's 2004 Royal Rumble.

Famous (2006–2008)

On October 9, 2007 the band released their third major label record, Famous. The first single, "Famous", was leaked through the band's Myspace and radio in July before the CD hit stores. Another track, "Merry Go Round", was released through iTunes before the official release as well. The following single, "Psycho", garnered immense popularity and radio play, and topping both the Mainstream Rock Tracks and Hot Modern Rock Tracks charts for 9 weeks. "Livin' on Borrowed Time" and "We Don't Have To Look Back Now" were the final singles released.

Their song "Famous" was the WWE One Night Stand 2007 official theme song and was also featured in the video game WWE Smackdown vs Raw 2008, as well as UFC 2009 Undisputed.

Vol.4 Songs in the Key of Love and Hate (2009–2010)

In 2009, former Guitarist Paul Phillips rejoined the band after replacement Christian Stone was let go on good terms. Around this time the band recruited "Famous" producer Brian Howes to begin recording a new record in Vancouver. Prior to the new album's release, band members said the album's name would be called "Jacket on the Rack".[5] However it was changed to Volume 4: Songs in the Key of Love & Hate. Released on December 8, it has gone on to sell around 100,000 copies.[6] The first single Spaceship was released in October 2009.

The band has been heavily touring for the past year and expected to take a few months off in late summer. On February 10, 2010, a new song, "Shook Up the World" was released. The song was written for Team USA, for use in the 2010 Winter Olympics. All proceeds from the song will go to TeamUSA.[7] Although intended for release during the Olympics, the deadline was missed.[8]

In late 2010, it was announced that Puddle of Mudd has parted ways with bassist Doug Ardito on good terms (he would however rejoin the next year). At the time, Ardito had been with the band for eleven years. Jacksonville "Burn Season" front man Damien Starkey temporarily took his place.

The Band hinted at the prospect of their first UK tour since 2002. "Get ready U.K. This is starting to look good!!!" They have since been added to the Download Festival and have hinted there could be a full UK tour later in the year.[9]

On October 15, 2010, Puddle of Mudd announced the release of their first "best of" collection, titled "Icon", featuring the singles from their first four albums.[10]

Re:(disc)overed, future studio album (2011–present)

The band released a cover album titled re:(disc)overed on August 30. The release features covers from The Rolling Stones, Bad Company, Led Zeppelin, AC/DC and others. They are also in the studio, working on their next album. According to the original bassist Sean Sammon, it is confirmed that the band's first two albums, "Stuck" and "Abrasive", will be re-released sometime in late 2011. Ardito rejoined the band in 2011 and is presently touring with them. Ryan Yerdon has been replaced by Shannon Boone. On February 1, 2012 via Facebook, Puddle of Mudd announced that they are currently in the studio recording.[11]

Connection with Fred Durst

Due to the notoriety surrounding how the band was signed with Durst, the band is often asked regarding their relationship with him. Singer Scantlin blasted Durst in an interview in 2004 with Canada's chart magazine. He stated, "He doesn't write our songs, he doesn't produce our songs, he doesn't do anything for us. He doesn't do our videos anymore. He doesn't do anything for this band. I don't know what he's doing, I don't know what the guy's like. All I know is that he's like Mr. Hollywood guy, Mr. Celebrity. Like, 'I don't hang out with anybody except Hollywood celebrities'. Every single fucking interview I've ever fucking done, I get asked about that fucking guy..." He added, "And for me to do interviews all the time and be asked about this certain individual... People think he writes music with me or something. He does not do that. I just don't get it. We have nothing in common. He doesn't even call us, he has his assistant call us to congratulate us on our record. Yeah, that's how pathetic he is."[12][13] Scantlin spoke recently about how the band interacts or doesn't with Durst saying, "...don't know."... "I haven't spoken to that guy for a long time. I tried to say hi to him but he didn't want to say hi, so whatever! I was trying to be a nice guy. We had a falling out for a while. Everything is fine. He's doing his thing."

On January 6, 2011, Durst attempted to get back in touch with Scantlin via a tweet on his official Twitter page. "Who knows Wes from puddle of mudd? I wanna connect w him again. Let me know."[14] Scantlin's reaction to this is not yet known, but both Limp Bizkit and Puddle of Mudd are playing together on Epicenter 2011, along with another one of Durst's former proteges, Staind.

In popular culture

In the video game Ace Combat 5: The Unsung War, "Blurry" was played on 2 occasions. One is in the hidden intro and the second is during the ending credits.

In the promotional video teaser for the fifth season premiere of Criminal Minds, "Livin' On Borrowed Time" is heard.
