Review

On Quintessence, pianist Michele Rosewoman is teamed with two of the top leaders in the M-Base movement (altoist Steve Coleman and Greg Osby on alto and soprano), plus bassist Anthony Cox and drummer Terri Lyne Carrington. The improvising is quite advanced, but, surprisingly, the free funk rhythms associated with the M-Base movement are absent. The solos and ensembles are outstanding and quite original (if sometimes abrasive), having a logic of their own far beyond bebop. ~ Scott Yanow, Rovi
