Rabwah (urdu: "ربوہ") is a city of Chiniot District in the Punjab province of Pakistan. Its name means "high place", and it is also known as Chenab Nagar (meaning "moon light through water"). It is located near to the historic city of Chiniot by the River Chenab. The city has a population of 70,000, and has been the headquarters of the Ahmadis since September 20, 1948, after the original headquarters of Qadian went to India following Creation of Pakistan in 1947; as a result the vast majority of the inhabitants belonging to the Ahmadiyya Community migrated from India to Pakistan.[citation needed] After the migration the Ahmadiyya Community bought this area and settled here.[citation needed]

In 1998, a resolution passed by Punjab Assembly changed the town's name from Rabwah to Chenab Nagar. [2] [3] [4] [5] [6]

General Information

More than 97% of its residents belong to Ahmadiyya Community. It is a small city surrounded by Hills and the Chenab River near Chiniot. This city is about 24 square miles in size. The landscape is composed of bare sedimentary mountains. The city is connected to the rest of the country by Pakistan National Railways which goes from the city all the way south to Karachi.

History

This deserted area was first called Chak Digiyaan. The Ahmadiyya Muslim Community bought the land in 1948 when most of the community members migrated from Qadian (the old community center) to Pakistan after the 1947 partition of India. The plan was to turn the land into a model city for the members of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community. The city was named Rabwah by Mirza Basheer-ud-Din Mahmood Ahmad 2nd Caliph of the Ahmadiyya Community.[citation needed] The organization's headquarters were established here. It is also the first ever planned city of Pakistan.[citation needed]

Politics

Ahmadis in Rabwah are not allowed to hold conferences and meetings there.[citation needed]

Education

Taleemul Islam School & College was one of the first educational institutions to be established in the town of Rabwah. It admitted only men and boys. The Jamia-Nusrat College for women is also another college established by the community. These were nationalized under Zulfikar Ali Bhutto.

Nusrat Jehan Inter College is one of the few educational institutions still under the control of the Ahmadiyya Community.[citation needed] It consists of a junior and senior high school and a college.

There is also Jammia Ahmadiyya (Ahmadiyya Institute of Islamic Studies).

Technology/Communication

Rabwah is covered by a number of mobile, broadband, wi-fi, and cable television networks.[citation needed]

Bazaars

Rabwah has two main bazaars, Gol Bazaar and Rehmat Bazaar. Nearby is a large library with separate sections for men, women, and children. and on the otherside is a very big Mosque (Masjid Aqsa). Gol Bazar is sorouned by very huge hills. At the time of prayers, Masjid Mahdi is always FULL with shopkeepers and visitors. All the shops are closed at the time of Prayers in both bazars

National Transport

There are also several bus services with routes to Islamabad, Lahore, Faisalabad, and other major cities of Pakistan. Rabwah can be accessed from M-2 (National Highway Motorway 2). There is a train station. The nearest airports are in Faisalabad (52 KM) and Sargodha (59 KM).

Climate

Due to its geographical location the town has hot summers and cold winters. The summer season is from April to October with May, June and July as the hottest months. The winter season is from November to March with December, January and February as the coldest months.
