Biography

The leader, pianist and music diector of El Gran Combo, Rafael Ithier has been one of the leaders of the Latin Tropical music scene for more than four decades. Forsaking the modern influences of Latin music, Ithier has remained committed to his traditional roots. According to Charlie Aponte, one of the band's vocalists, "People say that Gran Combo is about the rhythm, and as long as that hasn't changed, then, the same sound and style are there." Ithier first attracted attention as a member of El Combo De Rafael Cortijo in the late-1950s. Leaving the group, in May 1962, Ithier formed El Gran Combo with other former bandmates. Among the many hits that El Gran Combo recorded are "Un Verano En Nueva York," "Jala Jala," "La Calle Dolor," "Acangana," "La Salsa De Hoy" and "Milonga Sentimental," Despite enhancing their sound with the addition of a trombone to their horn section of two saxophones and two trumepts, in 1972, Ithier and El Gran Combo went through their lowest point in popularity in the late-70s. Tours of the Major cities of Latin America and the United States enabled them to rebuild their following. In 1992, Ithier and El Gran Combo were honored at the Festival De La Salsa during a concert that featured Celia Cruz, Cheo Feliciano, Andy Montfiez, Orquestra De La Luz and Grupo Niche at Madison Square Garden in New York. ~ Craig Harris, All Music Guide

Early years

Ithier born in San Juan, Puerto Rico, showed a passion for music when he was very young. His father, Nicolas Ithier, played music together with Rafael Hernandez Marin, another of Puerto Rico's music legends.

Musical career

Ithier became an expert guitarist in the bolero genre, and he was a member of the Tito Henriquez group, Taone. His sister Esperanza later inspired him to learn how to play the piano.

Ithier and his namesake, Rafael Cortijo, knew each other and formed a friendship at an early age; rumors of animosity would later surface but they both denied it, saying they considered themselves to be "like brothers." Ithier joined Cortijo's orchestra, "El Combo", during the 1950s. Before that, he was in a New York group named the "Borinqueneers Mambo Boys."

In 1977 Ithier worked as a music arranger on the debut album for the Puerto Rican ensemble band "Puerto Rico All Stars".

El Gran Combo

In 1962, Ithier formed "El Gran Combo", becoming the orchestra's leader. He has held that position for over forty years, and he continues to tour with the group, as of 2004.

In 1970, Ithier and the members of "El Gran Combo" shared a near-death experience. They were stranded at Las Américas International Airport in Santo Domingo when they failed to board the Dominicana Airlines DC-9 that crashed in the Caribbean. One of the members of the group had a bad feeling about boarding the flight, which saved all their lives.[citation needed]
