The Ranfurly Shield, which was first competed for in 1904, was donated by and named after the Earl of Ranfurly who was the Governor General of New Zealand at the time. It is informally known as the 'Log of Wood' and is played for by teams in the New Zealand provincial rugby competition. To win the shield a team must beat the holder of the shield at the holder's home ground. The current holder is Southland who beat Canterbury in Canterbury during the 2009 season.
