Raphoe (Irish: Ráth Bhoth) is a town in eastern County Donegal, Ireland. Unusually for the Republic of Ireland, it has a majority Presbyterian population. Conversely, however the Catholic Diocese for Donegal is the Diocese of Raphoe.
Two other facts distinguish this town: it is said to have the second highest elevation of any Irish town; and it has a living tree growing, with little protection, in the middle of the main street.
The Presbyterian Cathedral, a semi ruined Bishop's palace, and a nearby ring of sixty-eight standing stones (the Beltany Stone Circle [1])are worthy of a sight-seeing visit.
Raphoe has come under the media spotlight recently after attempts by the Garda Síochána to frame a local publican, Frankie McBrearty, for the murder of cattle dealer Richie Barron. [2]
