Background
In 1989, state broadcaster TVRI lost its monopoly when the government's sixth Five-Year Plan allowed private TV stations to begin broadcasting. RCTI first went on-air on 24 August 1989 broadcasting in Jakarta as a local station and was awarded a nationwide license one year later. It now has 48 relay stations around Indonesia and reaches 180 million viewers. It is 100 percent owned by PT Media Nusantara Citra (MNC), which also owns Global TV and 75 percent of TPI, both private Indonesian TV stations[2][3][4]
