Reader/Sorter

Machine that separates checks received from bank tellers or from other banks, sorting them into different categories. Checks that are payable by other banks (on-others checks) are pulled out first, and are bundled together in a Cash Letter for presentment to other banks. The on-others checks are processed first, in order to meet a local clearinghouse deadline. The on-us checks are sorted out later. A reader/sorter is a key piece of equipment in preparing Cash Letters sent to other banks. It sorts, encodes checks, and distributes checks.
