An organization that manages Internet domain names. Any person or company that wants a presence on the Internet must register a unique name with one of the more than thousand registrars around the world. In the U.S., registrars such as Network Solutions www.networksolutions.com) and Go Daddy www.godaddy.com) are very popular. The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) maintains a list of accredited registrars (see ICANN). See Internet domain name.

An institution or organization that is responsible for keeping records of bondholders and shareholders. If you are the owner of a bond or a share in a company you will be registered as a owner by one of these institutions.

Investopedia Says:
The role of the registrar is to make sure that the amount of shares outstanding in the market matches the amount of shares authorized by the company. For bonds, the registrar also makes sure that the company's obligation from a bond issue is certified as being an actual legal obligation.

Bank or bank trust department authorized by an issuer of securities to maintain records of the number of stock shares or securities cancelled and reissued. The registrar, by ensuring that only the authorized number of stock shares or securities is outstanding at any time, is protecting the holders' interests while performing a service for the corporation. The registrar normally is a commercial bank other than the stock Transfer Agent. See also Regulation 9.
