The modern use in the meaning 'to reproduce, imitate, or copy exactly', originally in technical contexts but spreading into general use, is an extension of a word that has been in use since the 16th century in other meanings. It is best avoided when more straightforward alternatives are available, such as duplicate, be modelled on, imitate, etc.
