There are several reports of unusual religious childbirths. This are in general reported in religious texts and are believed to be factual by some people. Some of the reports depict the childbirth as miraculous.^{[citation needed]}

Infertility

Sarah

• Isaac, son of Sarah, is reported to have been born when his mother was 90 years old and his father [Abraham] at 100.

Rebeccah

• An infertile woman who miraculously gave birth late in life

• A cousin of Mary who was married to Zechariah, but was barren and in her later years gave birth to John the Baptist.

Other unusual circumstances

The Buddha

• Siddhartha Gautama was reported to have been born after appearing to his mother in a dream, taking the form of a white elephant. According to legend, his mother had a completely painless delivery and bore him out of her side. It is also reported that as soon as the baby Siddhartha was delivered, he took seven steps, and under each step bloomed a lotus flower.

Lao Tzu

• According to some traditions, Lao Tzu was born an old man. This may be because the characters for Lao Tzu (老子) which are usually read "old master" can also be read "old child".
