Not officially, although many of the cultural aspects of the country are those of the Kingdom of Dahomey, the predecessor of the French colony (1892-1960). The country was the Republic of Dahomey from autonomy in 1958, through independence in 1960, until 1975 when it became the Republic of Benin.

Before it was known as Benin, the country was known as Dahomey. From 1600-1900, the region was known as the Kingdom of Dahomey, which the French dissolved in 1900. After it became a french colony, modern Benin was known as French Dahomey from 1904-1958. In 1958, the region changed its name to Republic of Dahomey and after 1960, it achieved full independence from France. In 1975 the Republic of Dahomey changed its name to Benin, which has been its name since.

The modern day nation of Benin was known as Dahomey during (and before) French rule; it kept the name for 15 years after independence before changing to Benin.
