at rest
[Middle English, from Old English.]
rester rest'er n.Rest is often a forgotten or underestimated element of an exercise programme. However, periods of proper rest are essential. Rest gives the body time to adapt to the demands of vigorous exercise. Without it, there is a serious risk of overtraining and overuse injuries. Lack of rest is a major reason for underachieving in competitions. Rest not only enables you to recover physically from the stress of exercise, it also gives you time to recuperate mentally. Sensible exercisers incorporate at least one day of complete rest each week into their exercise programme. They also avoid training hard on consecutive days. Serious, competitive sports people usually have a long rest period of 6-8 weeks in their yearly schedules.
Bruce Fordyce, the brilliant distance runner and one of the most successful ultramarathon runners ever (he won the Comrades Marathon every year from 1981 to 1990), gave the following training advice: ‘During the hard training phase never be afraid to take a day off. If your legs are feeling unduly stiff and sore, rest; if you are at all sluggish, rest; in fact, if in doubt, rest.’
It is worth remembering that when you are older, it takes longer to recover from intense exercise, and that you will require longer rest periods. See also overtraining and tapering down.
