[Latin rēticulātus, from rēticulum, diminutive of rēte, net.]

reticulately re·tic'u·late·ly adv.
reticulation re·tic'u·la'tion n.

Reticulation, orange-peel-like wrinkling of a photographic emulsion. In milder cases its surface goes matt, and prints look grainy. Reticulation is caused by large temperature differences between processing baths, especially between a cold pre-wash and a warm developer at high pH. It was once a common occurrence with photographic plates, so emulsions were often prehardened in formaldehyde before development. The only treatment (in desperation) is quickly to rinse the emulsion in cold water and plunge it into a methanol bath before drying rapidly with a hairdryer set to ‘cold’. Modern prehardened emulsions have made its appearance rare.
